I’ve been writing magic scenes this week, and since I’ve never actually cast a spell before it’s really freaking hard. The elves have been laughing at my bumbling attempts to be original but true to commonly accepted fantasy magic. I’ve been pulling the scene out one line at a time, and more often than not deleting what I wrote and starting the sentence again. Thank god the scene is about to take a turn towards the sexual; I’ve got a lot more familiarity with writing there.
My son is branching into the world of high school football. We thought that as a never-touched-a-ball-in-his-life freshman he’d be playing JV, but now we hear that as a 6ft tall 200+ lb male he could end up on varsity. Since he goes to the city brainiac school, and will be playing against 5 of the cities perennial defending top division teams, this makes me more than a little nervous. I’d be a lot happier if there were freshman and sophomores throwing themselves at him instead of some of the top recruits for next year’s SEC freshman class.
The box I shipped home from San Francisco with books, goodies, and dirty laundry showed up today. I am happy to say I showed remarkable restraint – only 40 books this year. Considering the 100+ I carted home from Atlanta 2 years ago, 40 is VERY restrained. Grimspace by Ann Aguirre jumped right into my hand. I met her at the booksigning, and she was absolutely charming. Yes, charming WILL get your book read first, I’m easy that way. Only got through the first 5 pages before the princess pulled me out of the bliss of a locked bedroom, but I can’t wait to settle back down with it tonight.
Looks like that’s all the time I get tonight – people want to be fed before I send them off to bed. And that sending off to bed part starts in just over an hour
